At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Criminal Groups

No less than 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Gang Growth

The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.

The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
